but the idea is that these norms lead to a move away from treating people as individuals

2020-01-10 13:58:24 UTC

if you allow "racism" to propagate then that will lead to a less "individualistic" society

2020-01-10 13:59:23 UTC

right, but the way you address that is not in a group manner.. its individualistic... and everyone is innocent until proven guilty

2020-01-10 13:59:27 UTC

and if you're operating off of the presumption that there are no meaningful differences between the races or sexes or whatever then these sorts of things become a lot more problematic in this regard

2020-01-10 13:59:40 UTC

sure it's individualistic in that you prosecute individuals for contributing to this

2020-01-10 14:00:56 UTC

i mean don't get me wrong, i can see why liberals who are very focused on state power would see this as anti-liberal

2020-01-10 14:01:08 UTC

and I would argue, an individual going on a rant about white people is not arrest worthy

2020-01-10 14:01:08 UTC
2020-01-10 14:01:22 UTC

but from where i'm sitting it almost seems like liberalism manifested in a religious form

2020-01-10 14:02:16 UTC

not really... there is no faith involved

2020-01-10 14:02:34 UTC

rather than being focused on the tension between the autonomy of the individual and the power of the state the focus is on maintaining a culture conducive to a liberal conception of man

2020-01-10 14:02:48 UTC

the only faith needed... is when people are arrested for saying "racist" things... you need to have faith in what their intent was

2020-01-10 14:03:33 UTC

that goes for any crime where intent is a factor

2020-01-10 14:04:26 UTC

intent can be proven tho... if say a murder occurs, and they find plans, emails, etc of the murder before it happened

2020-01-10 14:04:46 UTC

i don't think that's needed to prove intent in a court of law

2020-01-10 14:05:13 UTC

otherwise i think a lot more homicides would be tried as manslaughter cases

2020-01-10 14:05:41 UTC

of course you need to prove intent in a murder case

2020-01-10 14:06:02 UTC

yeah but that level of evidence isn't needed to prove intent

2020-01-10 14:07:04 UTC

yeah you can prove intent in many ways... thats my point

2020-01-10 14:07:33 UTC

but you wouldnt just go on faith

2020-01-10 14:07:43 UTC

you still need "some" evidence

2020-01-10 14:08:03 UTC

okay

2020-01-10 14:08:11 UTC

how is that any different for hate speech cases

2020-01-10 14:08:39 UTC

because speech itself isnt a crime

2020-01-10 14:08:54 UTC

expressing an opinion isnt a crime

2020-01-10 14:09:05 UTC

at least not in a liberal country

2020-01-10 14:09:38 UTC

well i think we've gone in a circle

2020-01-10 14:09:38 UTC

I mean whats the "intent" ... to hurt someones feelings?

2020-01-10 14:09:56 UTC

should that really be arrestable?

2020-01-10 14:10:04 UTC

hurting someones feelings?

2020-01-10 14:10:09 UTC

to spread a message that contributes to society being less liberal ergo contributing to the violation of people's liberty

2020-01-10 14:10:22 UTC

how would it be less liberal?

2020-01-10 14:10:38 UTC

how do I have less liberty if someone rants on twitter about how they hate white people?

2020-01-10 14:13:10 UTC

they are propagating idea that can contribute to an illiberal society

2020-01-10 14:13:22 UTC

in the same way for example that the weimar republic was overtaken by quite illiberal ideas

2020-01-10 14:13:27 UTC

and became illiberal as a result

2020-01-10 14:13:39 UTC

and violated what liberals would consider to be liberties to an extreme extent

2020-01-10 14:15:13 UTC

ok, contributing an idea... thats arrestable? so we should arrest all politicians who "contribute an idea" that might lead to something illiberal.. any communist... any conservative...

2020-01-10 14:17:33 UTC

and in general, when has contributing bad ideas ever propagated... I mean even in nazi germany the whole exterminating jews thing was massively kept secret - nobody even knew what they were doing until after the war... until then it was just conspiracy theories.. until they actually got to the camps and got evidence

2020-01-10 14:17:51 UTC

well it wasn't just the alleged genocide of jews that was illiberal

2020-01-10 14:18:04 UTC

nazi platform was deeply illiberal
