wtf bro dont insult my precious hunk of plastic it means a lot to me

2019-06-01 21:53:38 UTC

the early 2000s were a lawless wasteland of design

2019-06-01 21:54:04 UTC

though good things have come from it also

2019-06-01 21:56:33 UTC

yeah, plenty of cool shit and some unfortunate stuff. the computer graphics use of that style is often still pretty cool, futuristic... cant help but feel some of the hardware was kinda gaudy with all that plastic i mean christ

2019-06-01 21:56:54 UTC

yeah for sure

2019-06-01 21:57:00 UTC

lmfao. pixar ass niggas

2019-06-01 21:57:25 UTC

it feels like it has merit for creating an intentionally gaudy aesthetic though

2019-06-01 21:58:10 UTC

but it's not design for realistic, general, everyday use

2019-06-01 22:00:59 UTC

i wonder how we'll look back on design from this decade

2019-06-01 22:02:33 UTC

it feels like it's reached a similar longevity and timelessness as the international style

2019-06-01 22:06:45 UTC

looks quite nice in promo shots, theres definitely a character across the design, i suppose the flaws or liberal (in broad sense, not political) design choices become more apparent/glaring once you see it in a real life context

2019-06-01 22:07:01 UTC

its like if a concept car went straight into production

2019-06-01 22:07:11 UTC

that's a good way of describing it

2019-06-01 22:07:19 UTC

it

2019-06-01 22:07:19 UTC

'

2019-06-01 22:08:30 UTC

s designed for the sake of designing something that looks striking instead of for the sake of fitting in with the environment it's going to be used in

2019-06-01 22:08:42 UTC

yea

2019-06-01 22:09:33 UTC

there's a similar thing with big architecture projects in european city centres

2019-06-01 22:10:26 UTC

because the project carries a lot of prestige the architects usually seem to design very striking buildings that might be interesting on their own but don't fit in with the traditional architecture around them

2019-06-01 22:12:17 UTC

there's something to say for pushing the envelope on design and architecture which you can't do if you always need to hold back to consider what's already there

2019-06-01 22:13:24 UTC

I've never understood the idealist view of the 50. Everyone living in houses that looked the same eating frozen dinners

2019-06-01 22:13:33 UTC

i guess what's ugly or unfitting is subjective, but sometimes it just seems outlandish designs are being made for the sake of being different rather than good or beautiful

2019-06-01 22:14:24 UTC

this building is in the middle of a canal surrounded by 19th and early 20th century architecture

2019-06-01 22:15:36 UTC

i don't think it's beautiful, though it is interesting in a vacuum

2019-06-01 22:15:37 UTC

i imagine especially in architecture there'd be lots of (potentially impossible) considerations and differences across large amounts of time and changing culture and what not combating with the desire to make something "showy" and with its own ideals

2019-06-01 22:16:02 UTC

i dont know much about architecture and what goes into designing this stuff but man idk that shit is ugly as hell lol

2019-06-01 22:16:39 UTC

kind acool in that its maybe a representation of some kind of painting style in the form of a building

2019-06-01 22:16:40 UTC

i think it's interesting to look at in the same way as those blobby y2k designs

2019-06-01 22:16:44 UTC

yeah

2019-06-01 22:16:53 UTC

They are interesting to look at in a PNG image

2019-06-01 22:16:55 UTC

but it detracts from the established surroundings

2019-06-01 22:17:03 UTC

architecture seems tricky as hell actually now im thinking about it

2019-06-01 22:17:08 UTC

But a nightmare to live with

2019-06-01 22:17:29 UTC

striking that balance or not bothering. and if you get to head up a project like that you probably want to at least flex some creative freedom, maybe a lot

2019-06-01 22:17:43 UTC

yeah, i would if i was an architect

2019-06-01 22:17:53 UTC

i imagine 90% of architects don't get that chance

2019-06-01 22:18:14 UTC

it seems like a frustrating job if you have any creative passion
