I'd argue the NSX is a legitimate replacement
It's still a Honda, mid engine, and sufficiently advanced enough to show off the brand.
the original nsx was supposed to be a pure driving car, light, nimble with incredible road feel and feedback
the... reiteration is like 400kg fatter and disconnects the driver from the road
it isn't a pure driver car at all anymore
don't get me wrong, it's an industry trend, but usually they don't bastardize old names as cash grabs outside of america
I'm looking at you chevrolet impala
The original NSX was supposed to be Honda's attempt at entering the 'supercar' market, and it just HAPPENED to be a magnificent driving car. That wasn't it's *purpose* though.
The original NSX was never considered a "supercar" it competed with the 348/F355, base model 911s, the Lotus Esprit, Corvette, etc. All of those were just considered sports cars. Supercars at the time were cars like the F40, 959, XJ220 and EB110. The current idea of "entry level supercars" didn't exist.
The current NSX is a complete flop sales wise, and in kind of a no man's land as far as price and performance to the point where it's not a direct competitor for any one car.
Yeah, but *technology*
It is a halo car for Acura to show off their hybrid tech.
I doubt Acura cares that it is a flop
Well remember it was also teased for literally 9 years before actually getting to production, and it was originally gonna be a V10, the hybrid thing happened along the way because it was stalled so much. Then the debut of the actual production car was completely overshadowed by the launch of the second generation Ford GT at the same auto show, which had not been tease or promised previously at all. It was a really blunt lesson in terrible marketing and pr vs doing it right.
Also the original NSX didn't bring any crazy technology to the table, that's not what made it good. It was good because it a pretty equivalent car to the contemporary Ferrari V8 models it benchmarked in terms of performance, but it was also reliable and viable as an everyday car.
I think it shouldn't be forgotten that the "new nsx" is fat, dumb and comparatively boring
I think it should probably be pointed out that the original nsx was basically designed for driving experience over all else, with input from possibly the best person if not just at the time but maybe ever
all of that philosophy was dropped for the recreation
> the original nsx was basically designed for driving experience over all else
Source?
I mean literally everything written about it, there is plenty of information about it's development and plenty of reviews. Do you not remember any of that from when it came out?
I think it would be harder to make a case that the NSX name is supposed to represent the latest in cutting edge technology. It had a fairly low strung V6 and an aluminum body, nothing really crazy other than good chassis and suspension dynamics.
Hmmm.... I see your point
the real irony is, if honda had just called the new nsx something else, they might have been successful
relying on an old brand to carry them with a product that was significantly different was a bad idea especially dragged out
[*Flashbacks to Need for Speed 1995*]
That was a good game.
And pretty much went off the rails from that point on 👌
@LOGiK I've been telling another guy in here the same thing about branding
nfsu2 was great in a dumb way
I think the absolutely horrible marketing really worked against it too, if you tell people you're gonna make this replacement for your most iconic car over the course of a full decade, you build expectations to a point that's almost impossible to live up to.
Toyota has done the same with the new Supra name.
@LordCaledus lol you listening?
bmw has also... what the fuck has bmw done to M actually
I just remember the NSX being in the same class as the Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7
pretty much yeah
Supra was a fun car.
though I feel like the rx7 shouldn't be classed with anything else
M is meaningless now, there are SUVs that have an M badge from the factory and aren't even an M car.
also m was originally like.. light and fast
then the m8 gte
