Whatver, punt guns

2018-07-09 21:52:33 UTC

why is 20 smaller than 12?

2018-07-09 21:52:42 UTC

How many balls of lead you can make the diameter of the barrel from a pound of lead.

2018-07-09 21:52:48 UTC

It's the same measurement as 'bore' for rifles.

2018-07-09 21:53:18 UTC

So if you take a pound of lead, you can make 20 perfect spheres of 20 gauge diameter, but only 12 spheres for 12 gauge diameter, 8 for 8 gauge, and so on.

2018-07-09 21:54:29 UTC

that makes now thanks alot @Somi

2018-07-09 21:54:42 UTC

I've been wondering what that meant for a while

2018-07-09 21:54:55 UTC

It's a bit counter intuitive until you've been explained how it works.

2018-07-09 21:55:12 UTC

's back from the time of muzzle loading and casting your own bullets and such.

2018-07-09 21:55:40 UTC

I highly recommend a series on YT called 'Shotguns 101'

By Synchronizor.

2018-07-09 21:56:26 UTC

If it was just the bore diamater, it would have made way more sense

2018-07-09 21:56:39 UTC

That's only the case with the smallest shotgun shell, .410.

2018-07-09 21:56:48 UTC

Which is, as you might imagine, .410 in diameter.

2018-07-09 21:56:57 UTC

how many gauges is that?

2018-07-09 21:57:33 UTC

67 gauge.

2018-07-09 21:57:42 UTC

jesus

2018-07-09 21:58:02 UTC

The thing about shotgun shells is that not just the gauge but also the shell length matters

2018-07-09 21:58:42 UTC

Loading a 3" shell into a gun that only supports a 2 3/4" shell is begging for long term, or even short term, problems.

2018-07-09 21:59:05 UTC

(Vice versa is just fine)

2018-07-09 21:59:15 UTC

@Somi did you stop being a patron?

2018-07-09 21:59:19 UTC

No?

2018-07-09 21:59:49 UTC

In fact, I upgraded from a custom 2.5 to 5 dollars a month to access the first tier of Sargon's patreon rooms on Athens.

2018-07-09 22:20:27 UTC

I'd donate, but I have a few people I'm not donating to that I kinda wanna prioritise before donating to sargon.

2018-07-09 22:39:44 UTC

Very educational on the gages @Somi

2018-07-09 22:43:45 UTC

I'll admit while I knew somewhat, how the guage system worked I did learn something today

2018-07-09 22:44:06 UTC

but then it took me ages to learn what "calibers" meant when referring to gun lenght

2018-07-09 22:46:43 UTC

Well, let's share that with people then: Often, with cannons, especially the very large ones, you'll find indications such as '8.8cm L/71' or just generally '8"/43'

2018-07-09 22:48:10 UTC

The '/number' figure indicates the length of the barrel in caliber diameters. So, for example, the feared German 88mm gun fitted in the King Tiger tanks, the KwK43 8.8cm L/71, means 'Kampfwagen Kanone (tank cannon), 88 millimeter caliber, barrel length 88x71 mm'.

2018-07-09 22:49:24 UTC

Very educational. I will do my best to store this away for later use.

2018-07-09 23:15:55 UTC

I'm practically always available for any questions related to firearms, or weaponry in general, from antiquity to modern day, and from small arms to strategic nukes.

2018-07-09 23:18:32 UTC

I have been here for one day and already found several new types of ammo and guns I want/need.

2018-07-09 23:19:43 UTC

For those into vidya gaems

2018-07-09 23:19:51 UTC

Shotgun in Halo is 8 gauge.

2018-07-09 23:24:23 UTC

If people want to get learned, just ping me.

2018-07-10 01:34:58 UTC

I used to enjoy shotguns in fps ***shooters*** when I played them more.

2018-07-10 01:35:57 UTC

I was never a fan of shotguns in fps

2018-07-10 01:36:11 UTC

It's a bit redundent to write `fps shooter`

2018-07-10 01:36:18 UTC

I liked a lot of weapons, but enjoyed the one hit from point blank.

2018-07-10 01:36:23 UTC

you do know what the s in fps stands for right?
