it's nothing to do with race and everything to do with it being an unmanageable fucking mess

```Hair is more than what it looks like ... for black and mixed-race women, it’s often political.```
2019-02-16 09:28:34 UTC
my sides
2019-02-16 09:28:49 UTC
political hair
Cut those black people down
by cutting their hair!
```My boyfriend introduced me to elements of black culture I’d never been exposed to before - books by black authors, traditional dishes, music. One day, he suggested I’d look amazing with my natural hair. It was the push I needed. I ditched the straighteners and extensions. I was worried about the reaction after so many years of bullying, but needed to give it a go.

I started teaching myself how to look after it by reading natural hair blogs and watching early YouTube videos. I’d spend hours in my room learning about which products to use and how to detangle curls. After about nine months, it had grown into thick, full curls. For the first time in my life, I loved my hair.```

if it took her 14 years to get to get to that point

2019-02-16 09:32:53 UTC

plus the insistence of a boyfriend

2019-02-16 09:33:01 UTC

I kinda feel like she wasn't really that bothered by it

2019-02-16 09:33:54 UTC

lol

2019-02-16 09:34:26 UTC

it just shows you how good we have it, that this is considered an issue

2019-02-16 09:34:58 UTC

the next thing her boyfriend will teach her is how to be a single mom

2019-02-16 09:35:15 UTC

you know what I do when I'm not happy with my hair?

2019-02-16 09:35:18 UTC

fucking nothing

2019-02-16 09:35:21 UTC

it's hair

2019-02-16 09:35:24 UTC

it doesn't matter

2019-02-16 09:35:57 UTC

something something lived experience

2019-02-16 09:36:42 UTC

and she makes out like ***young children*** are terrible racists for being surprised by her unusual hair

2019-02-16 09:37:31 UTC

when I went to to Tunisia there were grown men in the streets amazed by my wife's perfectly smooth straight hair

2019-02-16 09:38:02 UTC

people are interested in things that they don't normally experience

2019-02-16 09:38:07 UTC

get over yourself

2019-02-16 09:38:47 UTC

and the whole black girl hair thing is almost completely contained in their own culture

2019-02-16 09:39:07 UTC

what ever complex they have about it is self created

2019-02-16 09:39:14 UTC

yep

2019-02-16 09:39:22 UTC

white people dont give a shit

2019-02-16 09:39:47 UTC

only extremely superficial wastrels give a shit

2019-02-16 09:39:55 UTC

but why would you want to associate with them anyway

2019-02-16 09:42:59 UTC

blacks have this whole light skinned dark skinned thing going on too, that is also within their own community
i knew a black girl whos parents didnt want her to go in the sun so she wouldn't get darker lol

2019-02-16 09:44:01 UTC

<:what:382980756139409409>

2019-02-16 09:44:28 UTC

you never heard about that?

2019-02-16 09:44:37 UTC

maybe it's an american thing

2019-02-16 09:45:50 UTC

darker skinned blacks are i guess jealous of lighter skinned blacks, and so the light skinned ones get a lot of shit for it apparently

2019-02-16 09:46:48 UTC

lol wtf

2019-02-16 09:47:00 UTC

why the fuck does it matter

2019-02-16 09:47:21 UTC

tfw racism against the blacks is perpetuated by the blacks

2019-02-16 09:49:05 UTC

yeah, i dont know if this is true or not, but i have heard that it started with the divide between house slaves and the ones that worked in the fields

2019-02-16 09:50:00 UTC

the ones in the field would obviously be darker than the ones in the house, and maybe there was resentment there that carried over culturally through the generations

2019-02-16 09:50:38 UTC

is that really how blackness works

2019-02-16 09:50:49 UTC

I thought it was the amount of melanin not time spent in the sun lol

2019-02-16 09:52:13 UTC

blacks can still get tan
