Would the Confederacy have won the civil war if they armed African Americans? I read that about 40% of the population were slaves. The war was basically lost from the get go.

Still, with a country with such a large slave population, the slaves themselves were vastly underutilised. They probably didn't arm them due to the understandable fear that they'd revolt.

There were slaves who served as body servants and cooks, and slaves who were forcibly enlisted into auxiliary roles, such as cleaning and reloading canons. I've read of very few documented cases of slaves actually armed and serving in combat roles.
