that was july of 2015, a month after Trump announced his candidacy, and ben probably thought it was "safe" to make such a statement, because he never thought Trump (or anyone for that matter) would be successful in making immigration such a huge issue. And he's kowtowing to Coulter a bit. At this time, he probably figured either Cruz, Rubio, Hillary, or anyone else would be President and the issue would more or less never rise to the fore.
Plus, this is before muh evil anti-semite alt-right trolls of the internet started popping up everywhere 😄
It's just like Republican congressmen when they're in the minority - they talk a huge game about this and that, and what conservative things they stand for and want to accomplish - and will even vote affirmatively for game-changing legislation (that they know won't pass because of partisanship nature of an issue).....But, if they ever gain control of the House, the Senate, or both, and have an opportunity to implement all these policies, they then become timid, insist on being magnanimous and crossing party lines, or just plain forget all the stuff they wanted to do before.
