I'm not sure if I made it up or not, but I reasoned that if the military can have a pace-counter (e.g.: http://combatsportsupply.com/images/products/detail/pacecounter.1.jpg) and the Catholics can have wooden rosaries (e.g:http://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/331700918224-0-1/s-l1000.jpg), then the two can be combined to form a prayer/pace counter for use on pilgrimages (e.g.: http://crex.org/wordpress/).

No, pace-counters are short strips of cord with 10-20 beads fitted so that they can slide freely. The idea is that if your pace-man takes 1 metre paces and moves a bead every 10 paces, then he will be able to provide a fairly accurate distance.

This is the first I've heard of it.

My parish is about to become priest-less for the foreseeable future (to be frank, it won't make much of a difference), but I don't think either of the two parishes I frequent have invested into that (it might not be available in Australia though).
