I found that the wooden ones are especially useful on pilgrimages because they can double as pace-counters. If you say some short prayer (even just part of one of the litanies) per pace and move bead per pace, you can keep track of how many paces you make and make your journey easier (combining the pace-counter concept of the soldiers of the world with the Deus Vult concept of the milites Christi.)

No, pace-counters are short strips of cord with 10-20 beads fitted so that they can slide freely. The idea is that if your pace-man takes 1 metre paces and moves a bead every 10 paces, then he will be able to provide a fairly accurate distance.
