what does that have to do with this again?

2019-10-30 04:03:44 UTC

why do you feel the need to defend theft so much?

2019-10-30 04:04:20 UTC

If the law makes something illegal that is indistinguishable from someone doing a legal thing, it's not a law it's a joke

2019-10-30 04:04:49 UTC

I see what you're saying

2019-10-30 04:05:25 UTC

But how is copying digital material and using it a legal thing

2019-10-30 04:05:53 UTC

Because I don't understand people who think it's theft when it bears no resemblance in anything but what record companies have desperately tried to promote to stay relevant far past their due date

2019-10-30 04:06:20 UTC

You do not have a right to listen to music

2019-10-30 04:08:17 UTC

People patronize artists, it's not about taking profit. Artists put art out to be listened to, and if someone thinks it's worth paying for they pay for it. Otherwise they never see a dime. If people did not pirate music, nobody would listen to anything that wasn't on the radio. Piracy is no different than streaming with adblock, beyond the fact that it lends backwards compatibility to periphery devices

2019-10-30 04:11:38 UTC

Are you talking about like radio stations?

2019-10-30 04:18:19 UTC

The default should be "im not entitled to this" and then you find evidence that you are allowed to have it.

Not start with "I want this and now I need to justify not taking it"

2019-10-30 04:18:28 UTC

like what are the things people want to pirate

2019-10-30 04:18:29 UTC

movies

2019-10-30 04:18:30 UTC

music

2019-10-30 04:18:32 UTC

programs

2019-10-30 04:18:36 UTC

books

2019-10-30 04:21:31 UTC

there's no reason why you deserve these things

2019-10-30 04:22:05 UTC

And like 97% of countries recognize intellectual property

2019-10-30 04:22:25 UTC

so if you are using their property, why would you be entitled to use it?

2019-10-30 04:22:34 UTC

well, it's because they either said you could, or you paid for it

2019-10-30 04:24:21 UTC

for the example of your friends music you of course can listen to it with your friend, and your friend can lend it to you

2019-10-30 04:24:42 UTC

but when your friend lends it to you, then he's not using it anymore

2019-10-30 04:24:45 UTC

this is how libraries work

2019-10-30 04:24:50 UTC

they pay for each digital license

2019-10-30 04:25:04 UTC

and if they don't have enough licenses someone has to wait

2019-10-30 04:25:58 UTC

and radio stations pay to use it

2019-10-30 04:26:40 UTC

Just because everyone does it doesn't mean that it's okay, and just because it's super easy, that also doesn't mean that it's okay

2019-10-30 04:28:40 UTC

and with that example of water, water is something you are entitled to, you need it to live (and any such law would obviously be a sin to pass or make) so of course it's okay to still drink water

2019-10-30 04:28:56 UTC

The only time when we are allowed to break the law is when it breaks the moral law

2019-10-30 04:29:36 UTC

eg civil rights stuff

2019-10-30 04:30:22 UTC

Again

2019-10-30 04:31:30 UTC

it's theft, there are people who made the material, they created the intellectual property and you are not giving them what is due

2019-10-30 04:32:00 UTC

and there could be cases like getting a book for school when you're super poor or something

2019-10-30 04:32:14 UTC

but that doesn't change the morality of the act, merely the culpability

2019-10-30 04:32:24 UTC

it is always wrong

2019-10-30 04:40:56 UTC

Intellectual property is mostly a meme

2019-10-30 04:42:14 UTC

<:really:602687746842165248> okay let's hear it

2019-10-30 04:42:21 UTC

It's useful to keep people from stealing credit for the work of others, but when you're talking about imaginary strings of self replicating numbers it's a joke

2019-10-30 04:42:49 UTC

They came up with an idea

2019-10-30 04:42:52 UTC

Anything released on the internet should basically be considered public domain

2019-10-30 04:42:53 UTC

it's on a computer

2019-10-30 04:43:18 UTC

If you only want paying listeners release exclusively on vinyl
