For a succesful rts, I think you need the following:
I know mozalbete has the brains
* Good aesthetics
That's it

Sucessful rts are made by massive companies, so anything indie needs to stand out with aesthetics and style
Thats certainly true to a degree
An rts is kind of not a massive company thing anymore
Or ever was
I would say that an rts has to be a great esport and allow for easy community tinkering
And also exciting to watch
do we consider Generals to be a good RTS
because it was so fuckin fun when I was a kid
it's still fun if I can be bothered to try to run it
Command & Conquer: Generals
It was popular and big nostalgia factor
Balance is weak though. High level play is just tank spam
Open niche imo but not as big as wc3refunded tanking
I never really understood what serious sam was about but I always had a blast playing it
TOP 3 FAVORITE RTS GAMES ...GO
Generals, Red Alert 2, Planetary Annihilation
it's a genre I don't touch much and I am well aware of the glaring problems with PA
@MawLr I used to play Verdun about a year or 2 ago, but it was pushing the limits of what my laptop can run lol. I'm pretty bad at first person shooters but I did have fun on it.
based, I used to be good in that game until recent updates also fucked up optimization
I think the best I ever did was calling artillery as an officer
And staying in a safe spot in enemy lines so people could spawn in
Speaking of RTS with great aesthetics, spellforce 3
It scratched my Battle for Middle Earth 2 itch
Not many people seem to know about it though
Literally as I talked about it
