2018-11-20 00:08:39 UTC

Converting from presby to Orthodox.
inb4 some people would call covertodox

He asked me about it when I said about purgatory in the filtpitchat

2018-11-20 00:12:52 UTC

What do Orthodox say the purpose of confession is?

2018-11-20 00:14:53 UTC

@Βασίλειος Θεοδόσιος I was born into one of those Korean megachurches

2018-11-20 00:14:54 UTC

Lol

2018-11-20 00:15:13 UTC

Confessions is a path towards forgiveness of sins and at the same time, unbounding the bondage of that sin

2018-11-20 00:15:15 UTC
2018-11-20 00:16:16 UTC

I don't have a proper keyboard and PC screen working to give further detail

2018-11-20 00:19:51 UTC

There is a hudge difference between Orthodox and Romans absolution formulas. @Quarantine_Zone

2018-11-20 00:20:11 UTC

_May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve you; and by His authority I absolve you from every bond of excommunication (suspension) and interdict, so far as my power allows and your needs require. [making the Sign of the Cross:] Thereupon, __I absolve you__ from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen._

2018-11-20 00:20:16 UTC

Roman one

2018-11-20 00:21:46 UTC

@Constantin le Lamantin what is the Orthodox one

2018-11-20 00:23:08 UTC

The Russian is influenced by Latin ones, but it is better than them.

2018-11-20 00:23:38 UTC

_My child, N. N., may our Lord and God Christ Jesus by the mercy of His love absolve thee from thy sins; __and I, His unworthy priest, in virtue of the authority committed to me__, absolve thee and declare thee absolved of thy sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen._

2018-11-20 00:24:16 UTC

The orthodox one is worth nothing compared to the Catholic one.

2018-11-20 00:26:58 UTC

_The Orthodox Church adheres strictly to the teaching of the Scriptures that only God can forgive sins, that he does so through Christ in the Church, that his conditions are genuine repentance and the promise of change which are witnessed by confession, and that confession, by definition, is the open and public acknowledgment of sin before God and all mankind._

2018-11-20 00:27:36 UTC

I will find the Greek one tomorrow, because here it's 1.27am, good night and may the Christ be upon you.

2018-11-20 00:29:12 UTC

The latin one is just the priest saying he is there to let you know that God forgives you. It doesn't reject the fact that only God can forgive you.

2018-11-20 00:31:27 UTC

This place given to the priest in the Roman Church is a direct consequence of the Council of Trent, where the position of the priest within the Church has really changed.

2018-11-20 00:31:49 UTC

We could speak of that tomorrow or another day too, if you want @Quarantine_Zone.

2018-11-20 00:32:06 UTC

But spoiler : their priest isn't a servant, he is a superhero.

2018-11-20 00:44:37 UTC

@Constantin le Lamantin Interesting. Lutheran rite looks like this:
Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (cross) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

2018-11-20 00:48:43 UTC

What's interesting for Lutherans is that we generally attach sacraments to a particular reading of a scripture passage, but absolution does not have a specific reading, but rather references John 20:19-23 instead. If I recall our ordination rite (considered a sacrament by some Lutherans, including my church) has multiple scripture readings.

**John 20:19-23 - New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)**

```Dust
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
<19> When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." <20> After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. <21> Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." <22> When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. <23> If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."```
Off topic: is it possible for one's empathy to just vanish
2018-11-20 00:57:47 UTC
Yes
2018-11-20 00:57:58 UTC
I'm gonna get an Opinel
engraving ideas?
2018-11-20 00:58:03 UTC
text only 😦
2018-11-20 00:58:07 UTC
else i'll get a chi-rho
2018-11-20 00:58:23 UTC
I used to have a pretty strong empathy tbh
2018-11-20 00:58:49 UTC
I'd seemingly feel things that I've never personally dealt with if my friends were going through it
2018-11-20 00:58:56 UTC
Now I don't care
2018-11-20 00:59:34 UTC
I saw a woman cry because her husband hit head and was unconsious, with half the bar thinking he was dead and I thought the guy falling was funny
2018-11-20 00:59:40 UTC
While I thought the woman was annoying
2018-11-20 00:59:58 UTC
My empathy goes up and down
2018-11-20 01:00:31 UTC
I try to do the right thing now
2018-11-20 01:00:45 UTC
For example: I beat my mother
Showed no remorse when I did it
2018-11-20 01:00:46 UTC
I didn't care for doing the right thing when I did have empathy
