I don't know why people think Japanese are like that. I've been to Japan a lot, lived there in uni, and made friends with many japs young and old and never felt that way

For the most part they see foreigners as just people like them. In China, foreigners are a whole different species

Never got that impression either. Nobody that's been to Japan that I've talked to, read, or watched has attested to that stereotype.

They always seem like a pretty nice people, if not occasionally surprised by the appearance of a foreigner in the extremely homogeneous rural areas.
