I can think of both SJW type people and older conservative people I know being mad about the stadium being built in my city with tax money

The reason it happens is because politicians see it as a prestige legacy item. Also, the damage isn't visible until after they leave office, so the incentives line up for them to do it
I live in Vegas, and several voting guides went around. One of the labels was that they gave money for the stadium. It was bipartisan support for it. Voters seemed to not factor in whether they voted for it or not, so it seems like people don't punish politician for doing such things. (the voting ended up being purely tribal and not issues based)
Yeah, that's what I figured. People let them get away with it, even if they don't like it.

I'm not sure if people outside of the UK can watch that, but it basically says this (after a very condescending 2 and a half mins):

I can US here. I would say fake news is good b/c as they are debunked. People become skeptical and will want more truth and less narrative and speculation..
