It would be great if people could stop calling it a "buyback", the government can not buy back something it never owned.

its def newspeak

2019-03-24 22:58:26 UTC

they spin that fact that gov cannot deprive you of your property without due process/just compensation

2019-03-24 22:58:32 UTC

so they HAVE to pay you

2019-03-24 22:58:53 UTC

are they even doing the buyback yet? A number of folks were just surrendering their guns for virtue points

2019-03-24 22:59:04 UTC

lol oh i hate those ppl

2019-03-24 22:59:44 UTC

buy a .22lr ak style rifle and turn it into the police while another person takes pics of it, then post it social media

2019-03-24 23:00:24 UTC

I'm not sure what they are doing yet, but that's what these things almost always get called when they happen.

2019-03-24 23:01:39 UTC

yeah, I hate how pols try to claim that a "mandatory buyback" isn't confiscation

2019-03-24 23:01:55 UTC

exactly

2019-03-24 23:02:23 UTC

confiscation with the required compensation.

2019-03-24 23:02:44 UTC

this was why we compensated the slave owners

2019-03-24 23:02:50 UTC

their property was taken

2019-03-24 23:02:54 UTC

or "freed"

2019-03-24 23:03:13 UTC

and why freeing slaves was such a thorny issue. they were property

2019-03-24 23:04:01 UTC

Since it isn't a voluntary transaction it can't really be called compensation since the money given does not surpass the value of the weapon to you (probably)

2019-03-24 23:05:09 UTC

its still compensation

2019-03-24 23:06:30 UTC

idk about new zealands laws, but here in the us. you must be compensated for property taken by the government. imminent domain is an example

2019-03-24 23:08:06 UTC

this is also why they dont ban things retroactively, because they would have to compensate owners

2019-03-24 23:08:06 UTC

from what I hear, these buybacks usually give you something like $100 for your gun. I'd still be pretty pissed about having to turn in my guns for something like 10% of their worth being called "just compensation"

2019-03-24 23:08:53 UTC

from what ive seen, the $100 figure comes from the voluntary buy backs that get done occasionally.

2019-03-24 23:09:15 UTC

the gov is required to give fair market value.

2019-03-24 23:09:30 UTC

anything voluntary would not fall under the just compensation clause

2019-03-24 23:09:38 UTC

hence the lower price at a voluntary buyback

2019-03-24 23:10:02 UTC

Except for bump stocks apparently

2019-03-24 23:10:11 UTC

and thats why its being challenged

2019-03-24 23:10:15 UTC

thankfully

2019-03-24 23:10:23 UTC

true. I love seeing the gun dealers hang around those buybacks and offer people more money for their guns

2019-03-24 23:10:47 UTC

lol or the dudes making guns and then going to the buybacks

2019-03-24 23:10:47 UTC

that entire bump stock situation is BS, even besides just compensation

2019-03-24 23:10:50 UTC

like zip guns etc

2019-03-24 23:11:17 UTC

oh totally, theyre making a stronger argument than just "just compensation"
