I agree with DJ that polygamy is an adaptive response to certain environmental factors. Often I think a response to a high violence rate with the women rapidly repopulating with the stock of 'survivor' men.

Polygamy whether consented upon, or not is the degeneracy of two-way relationships. Just as you cannot reasonably care for [X] number of children physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, and so on the same can be said with partners. You are openly partaking in said act that intrinsically describes your lack of faith, and commitment. In addition, there is a potential increased risk of STD's, and by proxy partners who are in said open relationship are more likely to sleep around with those outside that circle because that mentality is what plagues every single individual within.

Polygamy is not the same thing as an open relationship. It is multiple marriage and in the traditional context there would be the same amount of sexual fidelity as in monogamous marriage, just between a man and multiple women.
