we should have a system that lets local communities decide things instead of a centralized power

2019-09-02 04:15:58 UTC

Arizonians have some interesting lawns.

2019-09-02 04:16:11 UTC

I'm sure Nevada is similar

2019-09-02 04:16:21 UTC

@grant patchwork 😎

2019-09-02 04:16:37 UTC

@tomhastherage in deserts, they can do rock gardens and such. The same thing where I live would just cause problems

2019-09-02 04:17:33 UTC

yeah, people here in nevada are discourage from having lawns. It's better having a landscape that fits the climate anyways, less maintenance.

2019-09-02 04:17:46 UTC

I spent the last month in vegas. I think the whole city could use a massive shade net over it

2019-09-02 04:18:15 UTC

Exactly. I bet desert yards are super easy to take care of. Lol

2019-09-02 04:18:17 UTC

well we live in these things that have permanent shade and AC they're called houses

2019-09-02 04:18:39 UTC

@uncephalized what does your lawn look like?

2019-09-02 04:19:16 UTC

@grant sadly I had to go outside sometimes lol

2019-09-02 04:19:51 UTC

When a 114 degree wind blows in my face I get sad

2019-09-02 04:19:54 UTC

well I have a portable shade with AC called a car

2019-09-02 04:20:20 UTC

they recommend the yards go to natural grasses, which in theory don't require care.

2019-09-02 04:20:27 UTC

The ac in my rental could barely keep up with the blazing sun and heat

2019-09-02 04:20:49 UTC

well that's unfortunate

2019-09-02 04:20:51 UTC

my lawn is all natural... i live in phx so that means dirt and rock, but its xeriscape so i guess that's good

2019-09-02 04:21:00 UTC

@Putz that’s a fantastic lie. Lol

2019-09-02 04:21:31 UTC

A native, natural lawn in Alabama would require the same maintenance

2019-09-02 04:21:36 UTC

Possibly even more depending on what general ecosystem you emulate

2019-09-02 04:21:53 UTC

try clover instead, per that article

2019-09-02 04:22:20 UTC

Hire robots to maintain your yard...or goats?

2019-09-02 04:23:49 UTC

That Smithsonian article is dumb, it doesn't provide a solution for those who use lawns for a purpose. It mentions sport's fields, but offer nothing they could use as an alternative

2019-09-02 04:24:32 UTC

it only offers a solution for people who use laws as decoration

2019-09-02 04:26:12 UTC

just let nature have your lawn, then your providing habitat for local species

2019-09-02 04:26:38 UTC

@Putz it wouldn’t look good. Plus my yard is mostly native grasses anyways. I never water my lawn

2019-09-02 04:26:57 UTC

Replace your lawn with a defensive moat

2019-09-02 04:27:02 UTC

maybe a 20 year old car on cement blocks for decoration?

2019-09-02 04:27:31 UTC

a moat in AZ would not be considered environmentally friendly, lol

2019-09-02 04:27:47 UTC

Moats dont have to be filled with water

2019-09-02 04:27:54 UTC

@Putz that’s literally every yard in rural Alabama. lol

2019-09-02 04:27:55 UTC

But spikes are an option

2019-09-02 04:28:14 UTC

scorpions and rattlesnakes?

2019-09-02 04:29:15 UTC

Keep the moat filled with black single mothers. You’ll never get robbed

2019-09-02 04:29:17 UTC

Lol

2019-09-02 04:29:54 UTC

Or some liquid that won't evaporate...I dunno...

2019-09-02 04:30:07 UTC

Oh come on that was funny.

2019-09-02 04:30:16 UTC

Lol

2019-09-02 04:30:27 UTC

Oobleck

2019-09-02 04:30:29 UTC

Lol

2019-09-02 04:31:04 UTC

we went "xeroscape" about 8 years ago, i.e. i shut off the drip system and decided only the things that survived were worth keeping
