people think the status of that product is worth the 200% markup

2019-06-04 13:09:53 UTC

i would prefer to invest the difference and make my money grow instead of buying a product that will only depreciate in value

2019-06-04 13:11:16 UTC

The image I just posted to pictures costs less than a base model imac pro

2019-06-04 13:11:46 UTC

Granted I spent 16 hours building it... Lol

2019-06-04 13:12:46 UTC

but, to you, those 16 hours of labor are more valuable than the difference in price between what you built and the iMac

2019-06-04 13:13:23 UTC

if you have the means and technical ability to build your own computer, why wouldn't you always build your own?

2019-06-04 13:14:07 UTC

and you probably have a more superior and flexible product

2019-06-04 13:16:53 UTC

it doesnt take much technical ability to make a PC, and the actual difference is between that and paying maybe 50 bucks for setup

2019-06-04 13:17:32 UTC

Yep. Not to mention it's quiet without sacrificing thermal performance.

Another problem with apple devices is that opening them voids their warranty, but you have to open them up to remove dust. Otherwise your $2000 imac pro will run like a computer from 2004 after just 2 years

2019-06-04 13:18:09 UTC

@Beemann it depends on the build, but generally that's right.

2019-06-04 13:18:12 UTC

the only reasons to get an apple product are: you're dependent on apple software (e.g. iOS dev), or you wanna get cucked by a corp

2019-06-04 13:18:49 UTC

you could go down the hackintosh route too, really

2019-06-04 13:22:03 UTC

Hackintosh's are a pain to keep up to date though...

2019-06-04 13:22:27 UTC

sure, but if you want that software and dont want the bullshit thats your out

2019-06-04 13:24:09 UTC

Yeah it is an option. I just look forward to the day when Linux beats out both OSX and Windows in market share.

2019-06-04 13:25:28 UTC

technically it does beat out OSX, just not for home use

2019-06-04 13:25:56 UTC

but it wont beat windows for home use until DX gets replaced by a platform agnostic alternative

2019-06-04 13:26:16 UTC

which is a twofold issue that is not likely to be fixed anytime soon

2019-06-04 13:33:43 UTC

I assume DX is direct X?

2019-06-04 13:33:54 UTC

yes

2019-06-04 13:36:57 UTC

Wine has done a pretty good job of Direct X compatibility. I think the bigger issue is getting around the anti cheat software that most online games use.

2019-06-04 14:32:14 UTC

It's really not good enough at all. Windows is plug and play for the most part, whereas plug and play for Wine is often the exception. I've even had it stop running games partway through a play through (RIP Deus Ex). Wine is Better Than Nothing (tm) but it's not good. What I'm talking about is more along the lines of Vulcan actually getting used

2019-06-04 14:33:20 UTC

Lutris makes wine pretty plug and play. For the games that work

2019-06-04 14:35:25 UTC

If OGL or Vulcan or any of the platform agnostic competitors became an industry standard (in OGL's case, again) that would be ideal.
Wine in general is not really plug and play, even if you have another application managing it. Supported games with scripts to make wine setup easy still have problems down the line

2019-06-04 14:35:47 UTC

I would not expect the average consumer to use wine. It's a backup plan for people with niche needs

What a coincidence. I just read and linked this (in another discord) this morning https://quillette.com/2019/06/03/the-ultimate-concept-creep-how-a-canadian-inquiry-strips-the-word-genocide-of-meaning/

I’m sure this can’t go to a bad place https://twitter.com/jmcqueenfx/status/1135842143036219393?s=21

2019-06-04 17:07:25 UTC

@grant it's pretty wild that's the headline on CNN. Everywhere else headlines say 'Trump-tied/linked/connected', rather than simply that he's a former Mueller witness

2019-06-04 17:49:28 UTC

The dominoes are falling...

2019-06-04 20:25:58 UTC

“Dutch MP Lisa Westerveld visited Pothoven before her death and said she was impressed by the teenager's strength.

"I will never forget her. We will continue her struggle," Westerveld told Dutch media de Gelderlander.”

The hell.

2019-06-04 20:26:05 UTC

How is this strength

2019-06-04 20:26:47 UTC

It’s literally the opposite

2019-06-04 20:26:58 UTC

Wasted life it's a shame.

2019-06-04 20:45:42 UTC

Wait she wasn’t terminally ill or injured or anything and they just let her kill herself? This is not going to be a bright spot in history

2019-06-04 20:48:20 UTC

Looks more and more like the general breakdown of mouse paradise.
