but it appears as if microsoft is very comfortable retaining that risk. it's a business decision
That's not even what Apple does @Dan V they use customs to prevent refurbished products from entering the country, and ban people from their forums for saying it's possible to do certain things like recovering data from a water damaged iPhone.
There is also the fact that if you're not under warranty they charge you the cost of the device, or more for a simple repair that can literally be done in 30 minutes with a $10 part from a third party repair shop.
For example there is this: https://youtu.be/K98JYRBGyrg
Apple still has her banned for saying data recovery is possible.
i guess i was not aware to what extent their warranty controlled everything
They also have been suing third party repair shops for using "non authorized parts."
and yet people still buy their products
Because people are sheep
i agree! baaaaaaah 🐑
It's like buying a $100 pair of Jordans.
They're not even that good of shoes, but you feel important because you have one.
it's been long known that apple products are seen as a status symbol of sorts
a fool and his money are soon parted
you can buy a superior product for less but it's more generic
people think the status of that product is worth the 200% markup
i would prefer to invest the difference and make my money grow instead of buying a product that will only depreciate in value
The image I just posted to pictures costs less than a base model imac pro
Granted I spent 16 hours building it... Lol
but, to you, those 16 hours of labor are more valuable than the difference in price between what you built and the iMac
if you have the means and technical ability to build your own computer, why wouldn't you always build your own?
and you probably have a more superior and flexible product
it doesnt take much technical ability to make a PC, and the actual difference is between that and paying maybe 50 bucks for setup
Yep. Not to mention it's quiet without sacrificing thermal performance.
Another problem with apple devices is that opening them voids their warranty, but you have to open them up to remove dust. Otherwise your $2000 imac pro will run like a computer from 2004 after just 2 years
the only reasons to get an apple product are: you're dependent on apple software (e.g. iOS dev), or you wanna get cucked by a corp
you could go down the hackintosh route too, really
Hackintosh's are a pain to keep up to date though...
sure, but if you want that software and dont want the bullshit thats your out
Yeah it is an option. I just look forward to the day when Linux beats out both OSX and Windows in market share.
technically it does beat out OSX, just not for home use
but it wont beat windows for home use until DX gets replaced by a platform agnostic alternative
which is a twofold issue that is not likely to be fixed anytime soon
I assume DX is direct X?
yes
Wine has done a pretty good job of Direct X compatibility. I think the bigger issue is getting around the anti cheat software that most online games use.
It's really not good enough at all. Windows is plug and play for the most part, whereas plug and play for Wine is often the exception. I've even had it stop running games partway through a play through (RIP Deus Ex). Wine is Better Than Nothing (tm) but it's not good. What I'm talking about is more along the lines of Vulcan actually getting used
Lutris makes wine pretty plug and play. For the games that work
If OGL or Vulcan or any of the platform agnostic competitors became an industry standard (in OGL's case, again) that would be ideal.
Wine in general is not really plug and play, even if you have another application managing it. Supported games with scripts to make wine setup easy still have problems down the line
I would not expect the average consumer to use wine. It's a backup plan for people with niche needs
