It surprises me how so few people from the EU I talk to online know that people in their member states are being jailed for offensive speech.

When I provide the articles and evidence they still are in denial, like "how could my country do such a crazy thing?"

How you ask? It's because your country doesn't recognize inalienable rights. Your country believes rights are bestowed by the govt.

well germans are pretty well aware that talking about certain topics can have consequences but its pretty obvious when all sorts of games have weird analogoues of the swastika, instead of the actual swastika... in hoi4 it still pisses me off that they have darkened the face of hitler, rodalf hoss etc 😦 but i doubt people are aware how far it can go

I explained the idea of inalienable rights to a friend of mine from the UK a few months ago, and it blew his mind. He just couldn't grasp the idea that America is built on restricting what the government can do to its citizens, since that's not how he had ever viewed the idea of a government. I got through to him eventually, though 😛

The primary difference honestly seems to be that the US codified liberalism, while the UK assumed things would continue to work well
