There was a lot of politicking that involved the northern states (with higher populations) creating federal laws that absolutely dicked over the southern states that created a lot of the tension to begin with. Abolition was certainly a catalyst, but there was no way you could raise an army of volunteers at that time for the sake of slaves

Yeah, their economy would have taken a large hit. The 3/5ths compromise was made to prevent the southern states from having more electoral power than the north, things like that
