2019-08-28 00:47:13 UTC

amen

2019-08-28 00:48:36 UTC

do conservatives in here think the civil war was not for slavery?

2019-08-28 00:48:48 UTC

I was watching a video that said that I'm currious

2019-08-28 00:50:20 UTC

Seems like it was a bit more complicated than just a yes/no

2019-08-28 00:50:51 UTC

But my knowledge is definitely lacking

2019-08-28 00:51:50 UTC

I'm not american but I thought here was a document from the confederacy talking about their right to own slaves or something

2019-08-28 00:53:23 UTC

Spooner also asserted that it was not about abolition AFAIK, but about preserving the union

2019-08-28 00:53:37 UTC

And he was a contemporary abolitionist

2019-08-28 00:55:19 UTC

There was a lot of politicking that involved the northern states (with higher populations) creating federal laws that absolutely dicked over the southern states that created a lot of the tension to begin with. Abolition was certainly a catalyst, but there was no way you could raise an army of volunteers at that time for the sake of slaves

2019-08-28 00:56:07 UTC

Wasn't the south also hit harder by potential abolition than the north?

2019-08-28 00:57:26 UTC

Yeah, their economy would have taken a large hit. The 3/5ths compromise was made to prevent the southern states from having more electoral power than the north, things like that

2019-08-28 00:57:30 UTC

@Clive
Thank you, Mrs. THUNBERG...

2019-08-28 00:58:50 UTC

Of course, all this is second-hand knowledge from Twitter Confederates, so give appropriate skepticism

2019-08-28 01:05:49 UTC

50 years from now people might forget why we had ww2

2019-08-28 01:08:04 UTC

The results of WW1?

2019-08-28 01:08:56 UTC

We had to go rescue the Jews, obviously

2019-08-28 01:09:15 UTC

Never forget, never again

2019-08-28 01:09:38 UTC

2019-08-28 02:17:05 UTC

@Clive
We've forgotten why WWI started (no, it wasn't sinking the *Luisitania*), ¿why would we care why WWII started? 😔😔😔😔

2019-08-28 02:17:09 UTC

there's over a hundred years of history behind the civil war

2019-08-28 02:17:59 UTC

the civil war was a competition for dominance between the north and south taking place as one battleground on the planet where a larger historical war was taking place

2019-08-28 02:18:03 UTC

But but but but but nazis

2019-08-28 02:18:46 UTC

slaves were as much the reason for the civil war as the p-51d was the cause of ww2

2019-08-28 02:19:27 UTC

both were just elements that had relevance in a larger conflict

2019-08-28 02:25:35 UTC

saying slaves were the cause of the civil war is like saying jerusalem was the cause of ther crusades

2019-08-28 02:27:07 UTC

if you want people to be ignorant of the centuries of history before and after a pivotal event, you lie to them about the entire scope of the era, and pin it one little scapegoat that can be used to obscure what actually happened
