possible news out of NYC DOI may be charging De Blasio with interference

2018-11-19 16:53:34 UTC

What type of interference? Election?

2018-11-19 16:54:07 UTC

Investigations into mayor corruption...he is trying to pull a Cuomo

2018-11-19 16:55:05 UTC

Oh.

2018-11-19 16:55:08 UTC

Dang.

2018-11-19 16:55:57 UTC

To be fair, crap like this happens in my state (Alabama) with the republicans. Single party systems aren’t a good thing.

2018-11-19 16:56:01 UTC

The story is just breaking

2018-11-19 16:59:19 UTC

Ok.

2018-11-19 17:00:01 UTC

A lot of crap went down with a state representative named mike Hubbard in Alabama.

2018-11-19 21:04:53 UTC

Yo....is race a social construct? Why or why not?

2018-11-19 21:06:04 UTC

No. There are enough biological factors to justify a different race in a similar way we classify species.

2018-11-19 21:28:43 UTC

Ehhhhh

2018-11-19 21:29:12 UTC

Differences between ethnic groups maybe, but race not so much

2018-11-19 21:29:42 UTC

Either way it's super blurry and not clear cut at all

2018-11-19 21:29:45 UTC

It came up at work where my Deputy PM has said the same talking point I've heard where "Race is a social construct. Everyone came from Africa" -says African woman

2018-11-19 21:30:15 UTC

Yes and no. There is a biological component and there is a social component

2018-11-19 21:30:54 UTC

I've always been pretty dubious about who quotes these lines and try to understand the premise it comes from and how does it lend or detract from a conversation.

2018-11-19 21:32:06 UTC

I posted in <#266396659062145025> as good as you will get with that argument

2018-11-19 21:35:50 UTC

Here's something I've always wanted to ask. Let's say race is 100% socially constructed....then what are the implications of saying that? Does "race" then become something we no longer discuss? Do we discuss it anyways without any scientific guide for direction?

2018-11-19 21:41:58 UTC

Be sure not to conflate the being of a race with the racial culture. Culture is a societal construct. Black culture and White culture are names we happen to give practices engaged primarily of a certain race. The question was whether or not race was a social construct. Not racial culture

2018-11-19 22:06:44 UTC

@Chump_or_Champ the problem is that the word race has two meanings. One meaning refers to to biology and the other is a social construct.

2018-11-19 22:10:16 UTC

I wonder who is responsible for that 🤔

2018-11-19 22:18:53 UTC

@SteelandSouls I did actually call that out. The discussion was about Rachel Dolezal and her race changing or whatever. And African woman was saying well race is a social construct, so if she says she's black and we can trace her ancestry back to Africa, then fine, she can claim it. I responded "Can she then claim the 'black experience'?" Apparently claiming the black experience is a game changer.

2018-11-19 22:19:12 UTC

I appreciate the delineation, @SteelandSouls

2018-11-19 22:20:09 UTC

@Beemann what are you implying? Assume I'm stupid. 😏

2018-11-19 22:21:05 UTC

That the people who argue that race is a social construct have successfully pushed a definition of race that places it as a social construct, rather than undermine "race" as a central concept

2018-11-19 22:21:05 UTC

What exactly is the "black experience"?

2018-11-19 22:22:57 UTC

Waffle House?

2018-11-19 22:23:06 UTC

^Ha!

2018-11-19 22:23:10 UTC

Presumably the things that make race a social construct

2018-11-19 22:23:44 UTC

But I' d be hard-pressed to say that Black culture and the Black experience are the same thing

2018-11-19 22:23:56 UTC

People are only poor because they are black and they are black because white people say so and that’s why people are poor

2018-11-19 22:24:05 UTC

Or some other rationale as ridiculous as that

2018-11-19 22:31:51 UTC

Or rather, this: in that particular brand of black gangsta culture, it’s worse to call the police on a thief, wherein you supposedly would get stitches, than to actually _being_ the thief, which is a source of pride and “street cred”

2018-11-19 22:32:08 UTC

Word, homie

2018-11-19 22:32:35 UTC

Until that changes there’s no hope in these people ever being an integral part of civilised society
