they are not like... ON THE BRINK of creating totally autonomous trucks in the next 4 years

2019-10-25 01:46:50 UTC

they cannot drive if there is anything covering the lines such as snow... but somehow someone will wirelessly be abel to transmit into the vehicle and take control

2019-10-25 01:46:54 UTC

i highly doube it

2019-10-25 01:47:00 UTC

but in 10? yeah.

2019-10-25 01:47:07 UTC

and my point is

2019-10-25 01:47:16 UTC

if they cant do it with trains on fixed rails

2019-10-25 01:47:44 UTC

it will be a lonnnnggg time until the safety admin's of this country will allow a xton truck drive w/e human intervention down the highway

2019-10-25 01:47:52 UTC

bc no system is proof of going down

2019-10-25 01:48:01 UTC

what do you mean "if they cant do it with trains", they do, trains pretty much run themselves and have for like 2 decades

2019-10-25 01:48:19 UTC

and look at the statistics of autopilot on Tesla

2019-10-25 01:48:29 UTC

if that ssytem went down and then thousands of 18 whellers all of a sudden were out of control they would make a train wreck look like a dropped egg

2019-10-25 01:48:43 UTC

but do they still have a conductor?

2019-10-25 01:48:53 UTC

hes talking about no human in the cockpit

2019-10-25 01:48:57 UTC

but remote

2019-10-25 01:49:11 UTC

that was his key note points in his talk last night

2019-10-25 01:49:13 UTC

Yes correct, that is going to be the legal and safety related hangup

2019-10-25 01:49:25 UTC

and thats all my point was

2019-10-25 01:49:43 UTC

getting that passed regaurdless of how safe anything is will be a major legislative challenge

2019-10-25 01:49:48 UTC

its going to take many many years of proof in testing and a fail safe system before they leave the cockpit and shotgun seat empty

2019-10-25 01:50:00 UTC

but they will do it in the next decade or something

2019-10-25 01:50:10 UTC

but the way the trucking business works is, most companies do not have the time capital or interest in investing in a fleet of trucks.

2019-10-25 01:50:31 UTC

so the people who own them privately, automation will only make their business more profitable

2019-10-25 01:50:35 UTC

No no but the trucking companies are not the ones who would fund or develop that

2019-10-25 01:50:40 UTC

people who work for a trucking company may suffer

2019-10-25 01:51:12 UTC

Not to interrupt here, but the fact that most trucking companies have trucks which are at least ~25 years old with God knows how many flips of the odometer

2019-10-25 01:51:23 UTC

You would have some giant tech subsidiary dev shop doing research builds on that and end up selling the solution to many trucking companies

2019-10-25 01:51:44 UTC

but the reality is jobs that do not require the operation of vehicles that can kill people at a moments notice are much less likely to be 100% taken over than other professions that AI can do in an office w/o the safety facotr

2019-10-25 01:51:51 UTC

Might take a while to switch to fully autopilot trucks, especially if their prices are more or less the same as a brand new truck

2019-10-25 01:52:08 UTC

yes

2019-10-25 01:52:47 UTC

they could take the loss and carry it over.. maybe they could do another sudo "cash for clunkers" failure policy but i do not feel business's would fall for it like the gen public would

2019-10-25 01:52:49 UTC

Yes, im not sure of the viability of retrofitting a truck or some classification of trucks/common models to be converted over to self driving would be

2019-10-25 01:53:02 UTC

then it comes down to the insurance

2019-10-25 01:53:07 UTC

@nadrud we kill people with less technology

2019-10-25 01:53:13 UTC

to eliminate the human would be costly

2019-10-25 01:53:17 UTC

The insurance angle is what I'm most interested in

2019-10-25 01:53:26 UTC

they could potentially eliminate the hours...

2019-10-25 01:53:27 UTC

Because I used to work in body repair

2019-10-25 01:53:30 UTC

well if you can prove that its less likely to fail than the human rate, then the insurance rate would go down

2019-10-25 01:53:31 UTC

then beep the driver to wake up

2019-10-25 01:53:41 UTC

but when the driver wakes up are they able to take control

2019-10-25 01:53:42 UTC

???
