Flat is relative

If you drop the corner of your phone on concrete its going to shatter the screen. This aluminium border isnt going to dampen the impact enough to stop that

I think you'd have to test that but if its well made and fits snugly its going to diffuse the force of the impact to a wider contact area for the phone

I find it easier to just not drop my phone
