And you were either down with the allied war effort, and were expected to lay down your arms and surrender, or be shot, or otherwise prove you were going to comply with their demands. Nuclear attacks after nuclear attacks probably would've led to the collapse of the Soviet and Chinese governments pretty quick, people would be getting kinda fed up with them not surrendering to an existential threat like nuclear weapons.
