By definition, WWII was a total war for most countries involved.

All production of several nations was dedicated to the war effort.

Continuing the war with nukes after 1945 is just an extension of that total war state.

And you were either down with the allied war effort, and were expected to lay down your arms and surrender, or be shot, or otherwise prove you were going to comply with their demands. Nuclear attacks after nuclear attacks probably would've led to the collapse of the Soviet and Chinese governments pretty quick, people would be getting kinda fed up with them not surrendering to an existential threat like nuclear weapons.

FDR understood that he had Germany by the balls pretty much and demanded their unconditional surrender when he was negotiating with the Valkyrie plotters. Churchill was clamoring for him to give in and let them have a win. While I personally agree with Churchill on that, FDR had every reason to choose the way he did and to keep demanding unconditional surrender. There was no reason not to with America being in the far better position in the long term. Nazi Germany wanted a quick war, not a long one. So you'd naturally have to act against the interests of your opponent.

Truman however was a huge pussy, cried when he got put into office, wanted the OSS to be a newspaper, and then didn't kill off the red menace in it's proverbial teen years like they had killed fascism in it's cradle.

James Burnham, more or less, called for America to lead the world in a super union, like we basically have today but without gay Chinese ownership of production.
