@tacticoolyourjets yeah it was -4°F that trip and I woke up and my sleeping bag was frozen around my mouth area because I was breathing on it all night

Did you feel the cold creep up from the ground or did the mat help with that

My air pad insulated my from the worst of the snow.

A good airpad is completely indispensable if you're sleeping on the ground in the cold

until it gets a leak

My thermarest has never popped a leak, and I keep a patch kit in my bag anyway

Mine holds pretty well. It'll get lower over the night but never flat. Take one breath to make it firm again.

Yeah mine usually take a big breath to get it back up if I wake up at like 3 am

I reinflated it a few times last night because it was really the only thing other than a layer of gortex keeping me off the snow.
