Sure, Israel's been a pretty goddamn stable and ethical nation, plus it's the Jewish homeland and they naturally deserve a spot there, but the consequences of the destabilization of the Middle East as a whole just weren't worth it

I mean the Vietnam War would’ve been different if congress had actually declared war on North Vietnam. Since they didn’t we were basically restricted to a defensive war. In other words, it was the Vietcong that decided (for the most part) when and where any battle took place and since they didn’t have to worry about keeping troops at home to defend against an invasion, they could use their whole military might for offensive.
Vietnam was basically a clusterfuck of mistakes by the US
@Firefly can you ban this doxxer please

@killsometime Agreed.
Coupled with the general incompetency of the South Vietnamese Army without the aid of the US Army and the growing anti-war counter-culture in the U.S., it just wasn't a war we could've won easily, if at all.
It was something we could’ve won imo. If from the very beginning, Congress would’ve declared war on North Vietnam and made the Vietnam War an actual war, then we would’ve had the green light to invade the North rather than wait for the North to invade the South. You have to remember that at this time, the US is still moderately fresh out of WW2 and the massive island hopping campaign against the Japanese which all had the same environment and tactics that the Vietcong would’ve used in a defense of North Vietnam. The US could’ve very easily overwhelmed the North with a full out offensive on all sides. The only way I could see that never happening would be if China did what they did in Korea and bail them out. Essentially creating another Korea situation but in Vietnam. Either way, it wouldn’t have been seen as a complete US defeat.
Better governance of the South would’ve been nice too though

Police Man: Drop your weapon and get down on the ground! Now!
[Pardo drops his weapon and retrieves a badge from his trench coat, which shines in the light]
Pardo: Don't shoot, I'm a detective. Here's my badge!
[The Police Man waves the guns of the barricade down]
Police Man: Oh, sorry sir! Lower your weapons, boys. What's the situation in there? We heard gunfire...
Pardo: Yeah, you go look for yourselves. It's a bloodbath in there... Man, sometimes I hate this city. ...
[Pardo gets into his car and leaves.]

@killsometime Well we chose not to invade due to the possibility of causing another large war. Possibly a ww3. But due to that the north was able to be strong enough to push the U.S. out. The U.S. also didn't dedicate that many divisions for it, causing any new ones to have fairly little training compared to the first few.
The reason Congress didn’t declare war was not because of a fear to start WW3. Yes, the idea was thrown around but it wasn’t a serious concern. China wasn’t seen in the same light as it would later be seen in Korea because they were still recovering from WW2. The same for the Soviets. You have to remember that the Vietnam War started 10 years after WW2 ended. China and the USSR were horrifically affected by WW2 and needed years to recover. The US didn’t have to worry about that because they were never invaded. It wasn’t until later in the war that the Soviets really became a strong supporter in the North, well after the American policy of defense was known.
The reason they didn’t fully declare war on the North was because the US population didn’t want it. They did not want another war so quickly after WW2. And since it is congress that declares war, any congressman that voted for war against the North would very easily have been replaced. This is why many congressmen didn’t really respond to the president’s at the time clearly waging war without a formal declaration.
