dunno about germany but names are a bit of an awkward thing for us because we'd love to just use whatever it sounds like to the natives

but the forms require you to use proper name from your passport and you soon have two names

written completely different from spoken

however we do expect foreigners to use their native names while in the country; and we put active efforts to learn to pronounce it correctly in their language

we dont localise most of names originating elsewhere for discoverers, leaders, etc

thing is in german at least almost everything is written the way it is spoken. in english... fuck why is Geoff pronounced as Jeff?
