Well, at immediate thought, both airports have comparatively low ceilings to others.. but as I said I doubt that's the instigator.
Though my other immediate comparison is O'Hare.. but I have too many bright memories there, so I'm not capable of being unbiased about my beloved Chicago. >.> That said, that situation isn't pervasive throughout ORD, even as it is for PDX & DCA.

Big enough that it has decent sized jets, but small enough that it's not a clusterfuck like Atlanta

I find MCI (Kansas City) fairly favorable- having security be for groups of like 10 gates is pretty nifty- which is also why I'd like to prefer SFO..
