Penetrative power alone makes spears good- which is what you need against chainmail and anything less
least not the heavy stuff
most weapons were based on farm tools or were modified farm tools themselves.
They're good for distance between boats also super easy top produce
Compared to swords
spears are good in formation
theyre a lot worse out of it
and either way theyre tricky to use in close range
I said this earlier samaritan and even started throwing up videos and sources <:pot_of_kek:544849795433496586>
and a sea battle is nothing but close range
most armies were conscripts with sticks.
you have nowhere to move when your back is to the hull of your ship
Spear is the king of all weaponry- because it is simple to make, affordable and can keep being used till it breaks and you make another
you dont put conscripts on a boat
Literally a sharpened stick- spear
no you march conscripts
because fuck em
the bow is the king of most ancient naval weapons
Its tactical benefits (ie reach and can be thrown) come next
because you can bombard an enemy ship without closing
and training
plus you can shoot fire arrows
Most hunting bows you don't need a lot of training for tbh
The amount of metal on a spear vs the amount of metal on a sword plus its likely the tip isn't the part that will be broken anyway
fire arrows is a joke btw- history literally spits on them
history spits on a lot of things
they still used fire arrows
Hollywood went OTT with those and "vollety fire"
NAh they didn't
yeah they did
not extensively nope
i mean you dont need training as much as practice if you want to hit something
They did used spears to
that and other flaming stuff
maybe not extensively
but they didnt extensively use heated shot either
and yet it still has its niche
And when they did it was to set off a secondary (ie tar/pitch) but even that is not that much
Fire arrows make some sense but like against wooden buildings obviously or other super flammables
