i dont entirely buy the idea of the hedonic treadmill, nor think it will be a factor as it seems to be alterable neurochemically (drug addictions changing one's hedonic set point) which means it probably can be altered in a benign way

2019-08-04 20:24:21 UTC

neuroticism seems more important to look at

2019-08-04 20:24:44 UTC

so youre going to drug people in order to prevent their emotional state from changing

2019-08-04 20:24:54 UTC

this is getting wacky imo

2019-08-04 20:25:00 UTC

that's not what i said

2019-08-04 20:25:43 UTC

Just that it is alterable, and that it ultimately has no impact because it is simply a baseline

2019-08-04 20:26:18 UTC

so you want to do away with normal baseline emotions?

2019-08-04 20:27:04 UTC

I ultimately think emotional concepts will be deconstructed eventually but no, I just dont think the hedonic treadmill is an issue

2019-08-04 20:27:30 UTC

so you do want to do away with emotions as a concept

2019-08-04 20:28:21 UTC

why not just lobotomise everyone on the planet so that they can no longer feel pain?

2019-08-04 20:28:31 UTC

I don't have an opinion on the progression of the human psyche through integration

2019-08-04 20:28:35 UTC

just autonomy

2019-08-04 20:29:20 UTC

so you dont care about whether we have any experience of emotions?

2019-08-04 20:30:10 UTC

I don't particularly worry if synthesis will ultimately shed us the chemical reactions that lead to certain emotions

2019-08-04 20:31:03 UTC

well
you could achieve your goals of transhumanism by lobotomising people why not just do that

2019-08-04 20:31:03 UTC

I'd posit to you that humans are limited in what they perceive, feel and experience

2019-08-04 20:31:25 UTC

if you think this is equivalent to lobotomizing people youre being disingenuous

2019-08-04 20:31:33 UTC

I'd posit to you that humans are limited in what they perceive, feel and experience (2)

2019-08-04 20:31:46 UTC

transhumanism could alternatively lead to much more to perception

2019-08-04 20:31:51 UTC

emotions and experience etc

2019-08-04 20:32:57 UTC

well now we are back to the problem of the hedonic treadmill
why would we want this perception if it wont really make a long lasting or genuine impact?

2019-08-04 20:33:43 UTC

the long lasting impact is the broadening beyond our limitations

2019-08-04 20:33:51 UTC

it isnt about a continuous dopamine kick

2019-08-04 20:34:33 UTC

but we know that this is not sustainable due to the characteristics of the hedonic treadmill

2019-08-04 20:34:41 UTC

we will return to baseline

2019-08-04 20:34:52 UTC

and no real benefit will have been gained

2019-08-04 20:35:43 UTC

you are defining benefit by a set point of happiness of a person

2019-08-04 20:35:51 UTC

broadening of limitations does not seem to correlate with happiness very well

2019-08-04 20:36:24 UTC

why is happiness undesirable?

2019-08-04 20:36:46 UTC

when did i say it was undesirable

2019-08-04 20:37:02 UTC

I just don't think a pseudopsychological idea is the defining heuristic of benefit

2019-08-04 20:37:28 UTC

i dont really believe the idea of a hedonic treadmill

2019-08-04 20:38:52 UTC

you seem to imply that happiness is either meaningless or undesirable
so is benefit just being able to fire lasers out of your eyes?
i cant understand this effort to progress just for progressions sake

2019-08-04 20:39:56 UTC

also
continuum fallacy

2019-08-04 20:40:19 UTC

you are not understanding what i am saying

2019-08-04 20:40:26 UTC

just because happiness is ''pseudopsychological'' does not render it invalid

2019-08-04 20:40:40 UTC

the hedonic treadmill is pseudopsychological

2019-08-04 20:40:43 UTC

not happiness

2019-08-04 20:41:30 UTC

still
vagueness does not mean that it is invalid

2019-08-04 20:42:24 UTC

the conflicting nature of finding benefit through different inhibitions and levels of chemicals that could be altered at anyone's wish anyway is just that

2019-08-04 20:42:26 UTC

conflicting
