But if you disagree with the outer circles of Ayn Rand's ethics, then you're hardly in support of her philosophy

I support the idea of embracing selfishness for example

Ayn Rand had views that contradict her views on selfishness

You'll find this often with philosophers, that they don't have a complete understanding of their own views, so they have to refine them over time, and often radically change some aspects

An -ism is the extreme of an idea

I don't think being extreme is really that dangerous if that's what your asking

It's also often used to describe the whole spectrum of less extreme parts of the idea, but the -ism itself is the extreme part

It doesn't matter which idea it is, they all have the potential to be more harmful than good if brought to their ultimate conclusion

Extremity isn't really based on any concrete structure though

Think about it, Let's say for instance that the Nazis won WW2, By now Nazism would likely be seen as a moderate idea and any ideas like Democracy would be seen as Extreme, It is based purely on the beliefs of the society you are currently living in

For whether or not something is good or bad, it doesn't matter how many people perceive it to be either

Good or bad must be defined before they can be useful

Is pain good or bad? That's a nonsensical question

Pain can be either, it depends on the situation

It also depends on the individual

The mind, and the circumstances, together, define good and bad

This only gets more complicated as people are not perfectly rational actors

So therefore

Extreme ideas, since they tend to throw out this approach wholesale

That's why they're so dangerous
