I don't know if you're aware of the interviews she gave that add insight into her philosophy

2019-10-21 22:55:54 UTC

I don't agree with her completely

2019-10-21 22:56:03 UTC

Only partly

2019-10-21 22:56:13 UTC

I know she wasn't exactly a Nihilist

2019-10-21 22:56:23 UTC

She wasn't far off though

2019-10-21 22:56:32 UTC

But if you disagree with the outer circles of Ayn Rand's ethics, then you're hardly in support of her philosophy

2019-10-21 22:56:54 UTC

I only partially support it

2019-10-21 22:57:12 UTC

I support the idea of embracing selfishness for example

2019-10-21 22:57:36 UTC

Ayn Rand had views that contradict her views on selfishness

2019-10-21 22:58:44 UTC

You'll find this often with philosophers, that they don't have a complete understanding of their own views, so they have to refine them over time, and often radically change some aspects

2019-10-21 22:59:44 UTC

Do you agree that -isms are dangerous?

2019-10-21 23:00:11 UTC

What do you mean by -isms?

2019-10-21 23:00:35 UTC

Nationalism, collectivism, socialism, capitalism, etc. etc.

2019-10-21 23:00:39 UTC

objectivism

2019-10-21 23:00:39 UTC

famanism?

2019-10-21 23:00:43 UTC

fanaticism

2019-10-21 23:00:45 UTC

It depends on what one

2019-10-21 23:00:47 UTC

femenism*

2019-10-21 23:00:53 UTC

Capitalism to an extent

2019-10-21 23:01:01 UTC

An -ism is the extreme of an idea

2019-10-21 23:01:32 UTC

I don't think being extreme is really that dangerous if that's what your asking

2019-10-21 23:01:41 UTC

It's also often used to describe the whole spectrum of less extreme parts of the idea, but the -ism itself is the extreme part

2019-10-21 23:01:49 UTC

Ok

2019-10-21 23:01:57 UTC

Well I think being extreme is always dangerous

2019-10-21 23:02:15 UTC

extreme snowboarding?

2019-10-21 23:02:25 UTC

It doesn't matter which idea it is, they all have the potential to be more harmful than good if brought to their ultimate conclusion

2019-10-21 23:02:26 UTC

Extremity isn't really based on any concrete structure though

2019-10-21 23:03:20 UTC

Think about it, Let's say for instance that the Nazis won WW2, By now Nazism would likely be seen as a moderate idea and any ideas like Democracy would be seen as Extreme, It is based purely on the beliefs of the society you are currently living in

2019-10-21 23:03:51 UTC

For whether or not something is good or bad, it doesn't matter how many people perceive it to be either

2019-10-21 23:05:02 UTC

Maybe a different angle will help

2019-10-21 23:05:11 UTC

Good or bad must be defined before they can be useful

2019-10-21 23:05:21 UTC

Is pain good or bad? That's a nonsensical question

2019-10-21 23:05:31 UTC

Pain can be either, it depends on the situation

2019-10-21 23:05:45 UTC

It also depends on the individual

2019-10-21 23:05:58 UTC

The mind, and the circumstances, together, define good and bad

2019-10-21 23:06:32 UTC

This only gets more complicated as people are not perfectly rational actors

2019-10-21 23:07:22 UTC

So therefore

2019-10-21 23:07:40 UTC

Extreme ideas, since they tend to throw out this approach wholesale

2019-10-21 23:07:46 UTC

That's why they're so dangerous

2019-10-21 23:08:15 UTC

Gay marriage is now legal and abortion up to 24 week decriminalised in Northern Ireland

2019-10-21 23:08:27 UTC

thats good news
