The idiot that the Conservatives hired to advertise for them
*Scientists discover new gene in British DNA pool that makes people fifty times less likely to get things done*
*In response to this news, politicians push the Brexit date further out to 2021 because, they say, "doing it now would disrupt the British way of life"*
Reminder lads.
Nuclear powered ships are shit.
But they make the military sound better
Isn’t the point of nuclear powered subs is that you are only limited by your food supplies?
Nuclear is just superior in almost every single way
It's in many ways superior so long as you can guarantee the vessel's safety.
Never underestimate the importance of ease of maintenance though.
The safety measures are made so that they're proportionate to the dangers
Since nuclear is so much more feared, the safety measures are actually greater than for other ships
Proportionally greater that is
Nuclear is way superior for subs which operate alone anyway. But since carriers are always with a fleet of many other (non nuclear) ships, this isn't such an advantage.
Safety measures proportionate to the dangers can be a significant disadvantage on the operational/tactical level too.
If nuclear means that you'll be more cautious about where you send the CV, that can be a very significant disadvantage.
Nuclear has massive costs
Increased size requirements, weight as well
There's the mid-life refueling and the after-life disposal which costs a shit load of money
Also, some nations even NATO ones don't allow nuclear powered ships, or those carrying nuclear weapons into their ports
Nuclear powered carriers are "eh".
Your ship and carrier task force will always need food and refueling
So you're still bound by the same supply limitations as before
For the vast majority of countries, conventional power is superior
The thing is, suppercarriers are the biggest and therefore most fuel hungry ships in the fleet by some margin.
15 years of diesel costs the same as JUST installing the carriers nuclear reactor and fueling it
There's also the higher maintenance costs
The mid-life refueling costs
