The point of the wall isn't to have an impermeable barrier that can never be breached. If you stop even half of the illegal border crossings, the wall pays for itself. You can also pay for the wall by deporting illegal immigrants more reliably, and being better at tracking legal immigrants particularly when their VISA is about to lapse.

Instead of looking at the financial calculus though, the left is seeing that it won't stop ALL illegal immigrants and making it entirely about "messaging" and wanting to be loved by the rest of the world.

They care more about the reputation of the United States than its long term wealth and stability.

It's something that I find spectacularly short-sighted. I'd rather have half of the world hate the United States and only refrain from attacking us because they fear us, and be prosperous as a nation, than be loved by all as we flush our futures down the drain.
