Tanya basically grows up in the era of Trench warfare, remembering literally everything from her past life as a middle aged Japanese bureaucrat. Except in this WWI there's magic, and she has this OP magic device that only works if she prays to god.

She's only in that situation because she was an atheist as a Japanese, and she's desperate to live because if she dies there will be no reincarnation. So she fights with everything she's got in battle, because god literally told her, point blank, that this is her last try at living a good life.

So she breaks down and prays in the middle of battle, just so her magic device will do its damned job.
