The local Iranian navy does seem quite formidable on paper.

A lot of small subs

I'm sure they are a threat to the British mainland

They totally have an incentive to threaten London

Though the gulf _is_ rather shallow, so they may be less effective at hiding than US or UK deep sea subs

Shallow is good for subs

they can rest on the sea floor

threatening the trade routes is plenty enough though

making themselves quasi-invisible

and still be in ok range for attack

I'm not all that familiar with modern sub/antisub technology, so I wouldn't know

it basically allows them to ignore radar and noise detection

they go silent on the seafloor

so there is little noise

and radar just sees the uniform sea floor

there may be some fancy radar technology that can see that

This would probably be much harder without a lot of computational power, which would be the biggest issue during the cold war

fucking put literal camo on your sub

no one does that

so I imagine it's not an issue

camo will only help if the resolution is small enough

you can't put 1 meter or bigger "rocks" onto your sub
