i support anything that hurts silicon valley
the moral high ground is worth fuck all if you're being lined up and shot
amazon are infamous tax dodgers
dodging tax and running sweat shops appears to be the limit of amazons evil, they dont seem to have a big horse in the control of culture race
the ones that need to be broken up first are the ones expected to widely interfere in elections and society
amazon isnt even in the top 10 for that
true
i wonder if post brexit theyll lower VAT, that tax is a pile of garbage
side note: i'd like to see epic taxes on offshored labour
offshored, not outsourced
you could delete facebook, twitter, instagram in their entirety overnight and little of value would be lost
deleting google overnight would pretty much destroy the internet, parts of it alone less so. ditto amazon, you have no idea how much DNS is handled by route 53
what does "heavy UX" even mean?
we had working window managers in the 80s.
web browser in the mid 90s
thats easy, x-window based IRC existed decades ago
MIRC for windows is pretty ancient
most UI/UX bloat is crap layered on crap so that theres a new product to sell or to support lavish websites that are barely usable
no, ive seen normal people struggle with (for example) windows 10
or the labyrinthine mess which is chrome now
all browsers are shit, currently - you have to pick the one broken in ways that bother you the least
the question is what you mean exactly by 'SV'
you couldnt nuke it without significant fallout, but if your focus is social media you absolutely could hit the big DELETE button right now and people would get by
youtube is much harder to replace, there are no viable alternatives
but twitter we could delete right this minute
name a viable youtube alternative
videos which are less watched can essentially die on bitchute
bitchute also lacks a working monetisation model, so killing youtube would kill anyone who creates video content for a living and cant afford to set up their own streaming server
it still works for some people
the cheap housing is all in the north where the jobs arent
the government dont at this time truly care about the housing problem
you could kill steam no problem without too much trouble
yes you can - you can absolutely blow that fucker away
web shops allowing downloads are not a new or complex thing
theyd get over it, the majority of gamers wouldnt even notice
it wouldnt be the end of the world by any means
you could very easily just use an alternative electronic software purchasing platform - in fact some game creators do anyway
no it wouldnt, thats ridiculous.
immediately all the big publishers would just stick up shop fronts and downloads
indies would switch to the many, many alternatives
steam just isnt that big of a deal, its just a convenience, and pc gaming is a minority anyway
you dont need a storefront launcher - lets take an example. i can go to sony and they have whats called a "web site", and i can buy vegas which is a big chunk of data, and it "downloads" and i can install it.
the value of steam is not the purchasing, its the marketplace, the shop window
the drm is a somewhat valid point - i depends how its done. calling home regularly is bullshit. license keys and an install time check are fine with me
the pc market is smaller than consoles, and both are dawrfed by mobile - that's why im fairly chilled out about someone deleting steam. people would find solutions, at the end of the day it you could easily build a web site publishers and indies could simply list titles with screenshots and shop links
right, so you agree it's easily replaceable? 😉
steam also doesnt feature really high in the sources of evil anyway
they don't support the commodore 64 either. fuck steam.
rolling incompatability is a feature of PC gaming, you just have to accept it
wut
i probably own/play more retro games than the entire discord server put together, and even i wouldnt go as far as 'new games r shit'
that's not actually true
at some point youre forced to leave old systems behind
try to buy a SHA1 SSL certificate so you can support clients that don't support SHA256. just see who will sell you one
steam are definitely not immune to political posturing - remember 'Hatred'?
ah i didnt realise theyd reinstated it
it was rubbish btw
im having problems now accessing websites from my XP laptop, i cant get a new browser for it
and yes i know my xp laptop is obsolete, that one is a special case as it runs eprom programmer software that doesnt work on anything newer
the trouble is steam library functionality dies as soon as theres no working client, so you can never delete anything. thats not steams fault, you should back up your machine
well im going to play a game now. at least this convo was more fun and less dumb than, for example, media matters articles on how tim pool is right wing
nothing touches leftivists for dumb takes.
im dreading windows 7 end of life
i dont think win10 will run on my main laptop, and win 10 is a dumpster fire anyway
i mean the out of support for OS updates EOL, not sure when that is
yeah im sure MS will force the issue soon
if it had already happened i wouldnt have pending security updates from microsoft
my laptop is 9 years old so not sure if win10 will even work on it. it was top of the range at the time and i cant find -anything- available with a screen as good
its the nvidia display hardware id worry about
the screen is a 17" matte 16:10. just try to find anything with that
thats why i never replaced the laptop, ive replaced a few parts here and there
is there a bootable dvd win10 'tester'?
shame. i suppose the only way to test it would be to sling a spare hard drive in
yeah id rather not break it, i have one of the old drives. its a raid supporting system and i replaced the twins when one died and put a single SSD in
if it cant take win 10 ill have to find linux alternatives for a few things and do that
ive been using linux so long i made my own distro back in the slackware days. i dont use it because i have to use speech recognition software and it behaves better on windows
dont use it at home*
that and the unholy hell which is current desktop offerings. what a damn mess
one of those times 'everyone doing their own thing' just hurts the platform
not really, my girlfriend is computer illiterate, i built her a desktop machine, she just uses firefox and some awful flash games
it just works
yes, that can be a thing
thats the worst analogy ive seen this week
you're likening applications to frameworks that support applications
it isn't even in the same ballpark.
no it isnt, you dont need game 'launchers' at all, you just require a way to download the installer. now if someone decided to write their own html version and you needed a special vendor specific browser to download it, then you'd have an analogy to work with. that isnt what i suggested or anyone would do though in the case of steam
and its a million miles away from basic shit like "oh, my entire windowing toolkit doesn't work"
only ones you bought via that proprietry delivery system. you can still buy games on dvd. you can still buy software from the makers on shop sites, etc. is steam your entire gaming life or something? its the only way you could come up with such a myopic analogy
definitely strayed into 'lol whatever', ill get back to my game
is it a cult?
im not on board with tomahawking iran, we really need to be pushing terminator robots to avoid damaging all the historic architecture they havent knocked down as blasphemyyet
i thought this iran spat had already burned itself out when trump decided not to waste money on a missile
ah
look at the full post
he went on to say how its good not to demonise people while demonising ukip in the very next sentence
it takes real skill to not realise you've been a massive hypocrite in the space of just 3 sentences
*from labour remainers
it's the perfect story of how ugly many remain backers are behaving
shes a remainer, in a leave area, being bullied for not supporting a second referendum
