Well, I have only done it once, and it turned out great. So that's 100%

Just take your time.

I cut the VA logo in half, and printed it on two pages. Then I trimmed margins and taped it together. Then, I traced it onto the stencil blank. Then, slowly cut with exacto knife and the little cutting pad.

I cheated on some lines so as to not make sections to thin, and I cheated on some of the really fine details.

what did you use, posterboard?

Nope. Hobby Lobby sells stencil blanks. It's like $8 or so for 3 of them, roughly 12X18"

are they thicker?

They are plastic backed, and partially translucent for easy tracing
