Was a right wing position
To have it open
And then Trump changed it to controlled borders
And then a bunch of lefties changed their minds
and when did that happen?
i need citations for that lol
Over the course of the Trump campaign and presidency
Look it up: Koch brothers promoting open borders
And that's because:
Surprise surprise
Trump is largely your classical 80s Democrat
Now, if you're wondering *why* it used to be a right wing thing
That was because illegals were a convenient way to get cheap labor
And it was the Dems at the time calling it inhumane and saying citizens shouldnt lose jobs
It was an economic "Right Wing" position, not cultural/nationalist Right Wing position.
...just not nationalist
Cultural I dont think applies here

Couple forced to leave New Zealand’s most popular city because of how expensive it is
A couple has unleashed on one of the most popular cities in New Zealand, saying they were forced by costs of living to return to the UK.

Cultural Right Wing as in Social Conservatives and Paleoconservatives
Pat Buchanan and co.
Culturally it could go either way generally speaking
I read a few articles and the Koch brothers don't seem to be exactly "open borders", they even stated this: "The president has a duty to enforce the nation’s immigration laws." They did support borders, they were only against the deportation of illegal immigrants. Which, sure, isn't super right leaning, but is 100% not complete open borders. Although if I misread it, feel free to correct me.
You could go for the "govt dont tell me what to do" sort of culture

Tucker Carlson has taken that mantle in the current scenario
Uh-oh: Silicon Valley is building a Chinese-style social credit system
In China, scoring citizens’ behavior is official government policy. U.S. companies are increasingly doing something similar, outside the law.

But generally even many economic right wingers don't go as far as open borders
They are pragmatic on this issue
Even Bernie knows this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf-k6qOfXz0

Open borders only really benefits big companies since it just gives them access to cheap labour
It's mostly pushed by Neoliberals like Hillary Clinton than libertarians. But yes, open borders is a theoretical libertarian position, just that not many of the grassroots libertarians support it.
Bernie isn't really super left, so I don't expect him to support a sort of radical position like full on open borders
I'd go as far as to say that he isn't even moderate left
Open borders is not compatible with a soc dem welfare state
And Sanders is a socdem
"Moderately radical"
Bernie Sanders is mainly just a Social Democrat, Not even really an extreme one
US Democrats: Lets have open borders...
