They are Democratic Party thought leaders.
Look at the candidates in the primary right now. Why do so many support Medicare-for-all-with-no-private-option, despite that seldom polling over 40%?
Why do so many of them support abortion-at-any-time-for-any-reason, despite it seldom polling over 25%?

Because the Democratic Party, in no small part due to the squad and their influence, has shifted ridiculously left.

They know that the democratic base is so radical that these unpopular positions are the only way to win the primary.
