Not in an objective manner

2019-09-08 05:48:46 UTC

But you get grades for it

2019-09-08 05:49:21 UTC

If you want something theoretical, a class on taxes would be nice

2019-09-08 05:49:29 UTC

Hah, you're dreaming

2019-09-08 05:49:38 UTC

I indeed am

2019-09-08 05:49:45 UTC

The government will never allow a class on something that would risk a revolution

2019-09-08 05:51:17 UTC

School teaches you to sit still and listen and remember thing x.

2019-09-08 05:51:28 UTC

Not to figure it out by yourself

2019-09-08 05:52:02 UTC

Oh if only schools taught you to remember things....

2019-09-08 05:52:12 UTC

Classmates of mine got penaluhed cuz they didn't go the path they were supposed to, even though they got to the same result

2019-09-08 05:52:22 UTC

Penalized*

2019-09-08 05:52:31 UTC

Schools are an exercise in authority, it teaches kids that this is the correct way to live life as they grow up

2019-09-08 05:52:35 UTC

Sit and listen, sit and listen

2019-09-08 05:52:49 UTC

I seem to recall I solved a math problem in a way that was alternative to how the teacher wanted it solved and my parents chewed him out for giving it a poor grade

2019-09-08 05:52:57 UTC

It used to be a meaningful exercise when factory jobs were everywhere

2019-09-08 05:53:04 UTC

But those days are long gone

2019-09-08 05:53:17 UTC

apparently the conclusion was correct, the teacher just "didn't like" how I solved it

2019-09-08 05:53:40 UTC

Yeah, that's also my experience

2019-09-08 05:53:58 UTC

It's about exercising authority, not actually teaching thinking and learning and surviving

2019-09-08 05:54:40 UTC

Yeah, the“own way“ is but a thorn in the side of,the curriculum

2019-09-08 05:55:24 UTC

The problem is, young adults aren't concluding the correct things from their experience

2019-09-08 05:55:33 UTC

They think it's alright because they were thoroughly brainwashed

2019-09-08 05:55:38 UTC

So they don't revolt against this system

2019-09-08 05:55:50 UTC

Even if they hated it

2019-09-08 05:56:21 UTC

They conclude "I shouldn't have to pay my student debt"

2019-09-08 05:56:27 UTC

Instead of "what we were taught was trash"

2019-09-08 05:56:39 UTC

Why? Because the former feels so much better than the latter

2019-09-08 05:56:44 UTC

Selfishness

2019-09-08 05:57:13 UTC

PS: I'm not saying all students learned trash

2019-09-08 05:57:26 UTC

It's about the bigger picture. The decline of education.

2019-09-08 05:58:43 UTC

Did you know that learning by listening only results in about 5-10% of a long-term retention rate?

2019-09-08 05:58:57 UTC

Whereas learning by exploring and explaining results in 70%+ retention rate

2019-09-08 05:59:07 UTC

long-term

2019-09-08 06:00:49 UTC

So quite literally, whenever teachers "punish" students for not "behaving" (sitting still and listening, i.e. wasting their time), what do they do? They dictate things to the students, and the students are only allowed to do what? Sit still and write, not even getting enough time to *listen.*

2019-09-08 06:00:58 UTC

So the retention rate goes from 5-10% to roughly 0%

2019-09-08 06:01:21 UTC

This is so many levels of kafkaesque

2019-09-08 08:26:19 UTC

Yes finally!!!

2019-09-08 09:48:18 UTC

Amber Rudd is currently trying to discredit Boris by doing interviews with every news outlet
