The thing I didn't like was that there was this core clique that goes to almost every con called guests of honor. I find those guys a bit annoying

Reminder that today is the day of Ashura- the day the Prophet's grandson Husain, whom the prophet commanded Muslims to respect, a member of his blessed ahlulbayt honored numerous times in the Quran and in hadith, was slaughtered along with his camp at the hands of Yazid for refusing his tyrannical rule set up by Muawiya, who broke the promise and treaty made with Hassan, continuing the violence of the Umayyad family against the ahlulbayt and their supporters that began with Abu Sufyan, one of the chief leaders against Islam who fought against the Prophet, that led to the death of Hamza, continued on to Muawiya who rejected Ali's caliphate after Uthman and tried to kill Ali and his supporters in the Battle of Siffeen, leading to the death of Ammar ibn Yasir. His hatred of Ali was well known and his later command and tradition of the umayyads to curse Ali and the prophet's family also well known. Hassan then made a treaty with Muawiya to avoid further schism, with the condition that Muawiya not make a heriditary monarchy. Needless to say, he broke this treaty and, fearing that Hassan would not die before Muawiya for him to appoint Yazid, instigated a wife to poison Hassan then appointed Yazid after he died. The brutality reached a climax in the tragedy of Karbala when Yazid's army beheaded Husayn.

Thus in a great twist of irony the caliphate of the Muslim world ended up in the hands of the family that was the greatest enemy of Islam instead of the prophet's own family.

I encourage people to read about the first and second fitnah's in early Islamic history, western academic sources on them (Madelung has a book called the Succession to Muhammad that discusses general events after Muhammad's death), as well as the material on them from various sects of Islam.
