Japan has succeeded in playing the victim through its symbolic vulnerability, in its cartoon culture, to the point where Americans believe that Japan was the victim of american aggression, namely after the nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Anime has spread throughout eastern and western cultures, creating a new face for the nation of Japan, one based on cute, sexualized characters in cartoon fiction. Where during the second world war, America would have seen Japan as an evil nation, one who will send their own soldiers in suicide crafts just to destroy the enemy, now America sees it as an ally.
