old cat will purr in anybody's arms when petted
a simple change in cologne or laundry detergent will change a person's scent to any animal that remembers the old scent..and most likely won't recognize the changed person
each species has it's own way of detecting changes that is most likely beyond our understanding ..it's not just sights, sounds and smells
