In terms of privacy, yes, in terms of anything else no

2021-01-21 23:31:45 UTC

They are completely different browsers

2021-01-21 23:32:32 UTC

And neither brave nor firefox are that good for privacy, better than opera or chrome absolutely, but Pale Moon (Privacy firefox) Or ungoogled chromium (Privacy chrome) are far better

2021-01-21 23:32:39 UTC

but if you arent paranoid it doesnt really matter

2021-01-21 23:33:07 UTC

As long as you dont use opera because its literally owned by the chinese XD

2021-01-21 23:34:05 UTC

I heard lol. Thanks for the two browsers.

2021-01-21 23:38:05 UTC

np, ungoogled chromium can be a PITA to find sometimes, heres the link for it

2021-01-21 23:38:24 UTC

you'd want the Windows 64ibit installer

2021-01-22 02:45:42 UTC

Opera's data is still being handled through Norway, with EU laws. The Chinese corporation is not directly involved with their actual operations

2021-01-22 02:49:37 UTC

How am i supposed to trust that? its a chinese corporation, of course they would say that!

2021-01-22 02:51:00 UTC

In any case using a browser thats open source like ungoogled chromium or pale moon is a much better bet for privacy

2021-01-22 02:51:32 UTC

since people can actually vet the code

2021-01-22 02:51:56 UTC

Do you know if Pale Moon has support for regular Firefox extensions?

2021-01-22 02:52:11 UTC

I dunno, maybe legal filings within Norway and the EU

2021-01-22 02:52:28 UTC

Which specific extensions? It is based on pre-quantum firefox

2021-01-22 02:53:11 UTC

ooooo ok. NoScript, AdBlock/uOrigin mostly. They have pre-quantum versions out there I assume

2021-01-22 02:53:55 UTC

uBlock origin just go to their girthub releases and use firefox-legacy

2021-01-22 02:54:10 UTC

palemoon doesnt like noscript and blocks it by default, but theres a guide to get it in there

2021-01-22 02:54:21 UTC

Thanks for the info my dude

2021-01-22 02:54:32 UTC

heres the guide on making it as secure as possible

2021-01-22 04:19:48 UTC

Dont be using tor while connected to a VPN. Quickest way to deanon yourself besides logging into your email while using TOR.

2021-01-22 04:20:46 UTC

Connect to a VPN then open a TOR browser and go to whatsmyIP. Scary how it knows you are connected to a VPN AND TOR huh?

2021-01-22 04:33:40 UTC

On the technical side, what's the problem with using a VPN with tor?

2021-01-22 04:36:49 UTC

Why does it matter if people know you're using vpn/tor? Knowing that someone is hiding their identity doesn't tell you anything about their identity

2021-01-22 04:48:51 UTC

I tripped over this issue a few years back. I just got my first VPN service and thought I was invisible online. I figured, what the hell, I'll go dink around on the dark web for a bit. In the midst of surfing the high seas of the world wide web, I decided to see how invisible I really was. So I made sure I was connected to my VPN, double checked DNS leaks, and opened TOR. Went to whatsmyIP and almost shit myself. How did my proxy IP get leaked? It showed my proxy IP as well as the entry node and exit node. Didn't show my origin IP. Apparently IPv6 was, and still is, the issue with TOR. https://www.americanpeacenik.com/the-state-of-ipv6-support-on-the-tor-network/

2021-01-22 04:50:24 UTC

TOR is an older network, designed decades ago. in 2021 only half the network is configured for IPv6.

2021-01-22 04:51:29 UTC

If you want to remain absolutely anonymous, use TOR and only TOR. Don't login to personal accounts. Don't use google. And don't have multiple browsers open at the same time

2021-01-22 04:52:08 UTC

And never use an HTTP protocol. HTTPS only.

2021-01-22 04:53:14 UTC

Infact, take it a step further, buy a 64GB thumb drive and download TAILS OS.

2021-01-22 04:57:15 UTC

VPNs are great for things like The Pirate Bay, Public Wifi, and mediocre encryption (Lets face it, the five eyes has master keys).

2021-01-22 04:58:13 UTC

I use a VPN daily, and TOR when I want to know what is really going on in the world

2021-01-22 04:59:11 UTC

Onion sites are not discoverable on a normal browser. You need TOR or a plugin to access those sites.

2021-01-22 04:59:45 UTC

There are search engines available for TOR sites, some are quite dated....

2021-01-22 05:05:53 UTC

So, keep this information in mind. VPNs are awesome, TOR, when properly configured and used, is even better.

2021-01-22 05:15:41 UTC

Well I wouldn't be affected by the IPv6 vulnerability anyway, my router is great but doesn't route IPv6 for some reason.

2021-01-22 05:18:08 UTC

Honestly I don't believe that one, your main encryption algorithms are all open standards that have had every cyber security person in the world look at at least once in their life. If there was a back door somebody would have found it by now and exploited it. Plus, if they already had the back doors, it would only be hurting their cause by pushing for back doors to be included. It would be bringing attention to something that the average person wouldn't even think of otherwise.

2021-01-22 05:25:55 UTC

I was meaning that in terms of encryption, how things are encrypted, and how nation state actors can gain access to encrypted data is why I called it mediocre.

2021-01-22 05:27:24 UTC

IME is a backdoor that can bypass VPN and TOR encryption as it has higher permissions than the user
