Read in ''The Monks of War'' that a lot of crusader orders loved to read Maccabees as inspiration for their actions. When I read it it made no sense to me that Luther just scrapped the whole thing cause it looked like more of a history document than anything. Was it then an attack on the crusaders mentality?
Mostly trying to understand what seems subtle changes and see how it changed European mentality. The loss of the crusader ideal seems like a really giant disaster.
Agreed, I don't think liberalism would have spread quite as much in northern europe if we still had a mentality of defending the faith, orthodoxy and family above all else
