it's marketing tech being used to feed a user's interests, which creates echo-chambers... they would have to disable recommended videos/posts to make any difference
I don't think filtering is the problem. The problem is that the user does not choose their filters. There are not enough hours in the day to consume every viewpoint. You simply have to impose a certain level of information hygiene to get through the day.
that did not work out so well for them. let try reinvent the wheel by throwing away what we have learned of snow removal since we did invent cars and roads

Just read a book about this problem it's called an inadequate equilibrium. A system like social media can fall into an equilibrium even if it is not an ideal system. Like Twitter or FB. So even a preferable system cannot compete because the equilibria point has already been fulfilled by an inadequate one.
