As far as I've been able to ascertain, everything started as "normal" in order to lead the Portugese police on a wild goose chase... which was successful.

The problem was that News of the World decided to run with it as a campaign and got the Portugese to re-open the case. Scotland Yard have been all over it since then to put a lid on it - which is mostly successful with mainstream media, but the breadcrumbs do exist, but following them is risky.
